Before you become upset, keep in mind that Marvel is still running with the multiverse saga. With that being said, Marvel makes comic book movies. There are several versions of Doctor Doom where he is Tony Stark within the comics. So before you express your disgust on Twitter, take a deep breath. It's a comic book movie, possibly following a comic book story line.
With the fact that I am plugged in to all things Marvel, I have heard and seen the typical fans frustration and complaints.
"It doesn't feel the same."
"I miss the old Marvel."
"It just doesn't hit the same."
I've seen and heard it all. Bringing back Anthony and Joseph Russo should bring back the feeling that viewers have complained that has been missing as they notoriously have directed Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame.
The Russo Brothers have signed on to direct both The Avengers: Doomsday and The Avengers: Secret Wars. Slated to be released in May 2026 and May 2027 respectively. The decision to bring them back, along with Robert Downey Jr, may be due to a number of things.
In my opinion, due to the fact that Marvel is first and foremost a company, and the goal of a company is sustainability while making a profit, this trio is almost guaranteed to get butts in seats at the theater!
I will admit it here, open and honestly, I did not like Iron Man when he was first introduced. It took up to the ending of the first Avengers film before I was able to consider myself a fan. By the time the credits rolled at the end of Endgame, I had tears in my eyes like everyone else around me. With that being said, Marvel was faced with some tough choices within the past year.
With the situation that happened with Jonathan Majors, the decision to not recast him, which then led to scrapping Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, some very critically decisions needed to be made in order for the MCU to continue and make sense. I initially tweeted on December 18th, 2023, when it was revealed by Culture Crave that a decision on what to do with the character had not been made yet, to move forward in a way that they are choosing to do at this point in time.
"Scrap Kang Dynasty. Start introducing Doom. Roll out Fantastic Four. AND START ON X-MEN!!!!!" It made sense, with the upcoming focus being on Fantastic Four, to introduce a 'new big bad' due to needing a Kang replacement if a recast was not imminent.
What star, who enjoys being a part of super hero films, is big enough to get Marvel die hard fans back to the theater while, at the same time, able to make everyone forget about Kang?
Robert Downey Jr., that's who. I just wasn't thinking big enough back in December of 2023. I will miss what we could have had with Jonathan Majors, and I do understand the negative feelings that some people are voicing during this time.
I feel so many things now that RDJ and the Russo brothers are back.
Relief. Happiness. Joy. Hopefulness.
I don't want to say 'Marvel is Back!' because I didn't clock out after Endgame but I am incredibly excited to see where things stand in 2027.
